Living And Care With Dementia

Meet Annie.

Annie, a widow, in White Rock, was diagnosed with dementia at age 78. With few symptoms when diagnosed, she has been living a full life for the past 7 years, attending a day program 1 day a week at local seniors centre, going for a walk each day on the beach, visiting friends who can no longer drive. But now 7 years later, things have changed.

She recently mixed up her pills in her blister pack and found herself in the hospital two weeks. After her pill mishap and other incidents, her driver’s license has been revoked by her doctor. Annie loves breakfast but sometimes forgets to eat until dinner. Cooking has become a challenge as she occasionally forgets to turn off the stove or oven. Family and friends are getting more worried about her and cannot consistently help Annie as she now requires.

She has home care support 2 hours per day, 4 days per week and 4 hours per day, 3 days per week (for taking her to and from appointments).

Annie is a typical client dealing with dementia at Happiness at Home Health care. She is feeling alert and more energetic as she is eating regularly, medications are taken as directed, and she is resuming more of her regular activities now. She jokes she has her own personal chauffeur. Her daughter says she feels a peace of mind, knowing her mother has more support and is enjoying the care giver’s friendship. Now the family can visit rather than do errands and care activities.
